Comparison

DayZero vs Puzzle

Both are AI-native accounting platforms with a real accrual ledger and agents that close the books. The difference is the shape of business each one is built for.

The short version
Pick them if

You are a US software company or service business with one entity, billing in dollars, with no inventory. Puzzle is built precisely for you, its close automation is strong, and its partner-only promise to accounting firms is one we cannot match.

Pick DayZero if

You hold inventory, invoice in more than one currency, or consolidate multiple entities — all three of which Puzzle puts out of scope. Or you want to drive the books from an AI agent with real guardrails.

The ledger
Accrual accountingSupported: Double-entry ledger with cash and accrual reporting from the same books.Supported: Double-entry ledger with cash and accrual from the same books, plus accrual automation for prepaids, fixed assets, and revenue recognition.
Close automationSupported: 24 specialist agents run reconciliation, accruals, close checklists, and close-readiness scoring.Supported: AI Close agents handle categorization and reconciliation. Puzzle advertises up to 50% faster close and up to 98% automation.

Beyond the ledger
Invoicing & ARSupported: Create, send, and track invoices with Stripe-powered collection and automatic revenue recognition.Supported: Create, manage, and track invoices, with a native Stripe integration that syncs invoices and automates accrual revenue recognition.
AP & bill paySupported: Scan bills, extract line items, route approvals, schedule payments, and track vendor balances in one place.Partially supported: Bills can be entered directly, imported by CSV, or synced from Ramp, Brex, and Bill.com — but the payment itself happens in those tools, not in Puzzle.
InventorySupported: Catalog, BOMs, POs, 3-way match, cost lots, and landed cost, connected to the ledger. Not supported: Puzzle states it is “currently optimized for software companies” and that “companies with inventory may have accounting needs that Puzzle is not yet optimized to support.”
PayrollSupported: Synced through Finch, so payroll journals post to the ledger automatically.Supported: Payroll runs sync from Gusto, Rippling, Deel, and Ramp into categorized journal entries. Neither product processes payroll itself.
Multi-currencySupported: Supported, with FX rates maintained in the ledger. Not supported: Not supported — Puzzle is built for USD, single-entity operations. On their roadmap.
Multi-entity consolidationSupported: Entity groups and intercompany elimination built into the ledger.Partially supported: A master login switches between companies, and the Core plan adds multi-entity through a third-party integration. Puzzle does not migrate foreign subsidiaries or entities needing consolidated financials.
For accounting firms

Firm hierarchy & teamsSupported: Firms, teams, staff invitations, per-client access grants, and shared chart-of-accounts templates.Partially supported: A master login spans client companies; Puzzle does not publish a firm-level team or template hierarchy.
Cross-client questionsSupported: Firm-wide tools answer questions across every client in one call, rather than looping client by client.Partially supported: Per-company views; cross-client analysis is manual.
Never competes with your firmPartially supported: DayZero also offers a managed bookkeeping service, so a firm is buying from a vendor that has its own accounting team.Supported: Puzzle states it “does not directly provide bookkeeping, tax, or any accounting services directly” — a genuine partner-only model.
Building on it
MCP server for AI agentsSupported: Hosted remote server with OAuth 2.1 and scoped tokens, including firm-wide fan-out across every client in one call. Not supported: No MCP server published.
Public APISupported: Open REST API with a published reference page for every operation.Partially supported: In active development and gated — access is limited to platform partners and large firms, evaluated case by case. No public reference.
Safe agent writesSupported: Dry-run by default, explicit approval on send, void, and finalize, and a tamper-evident audit chain that records whether a human or an agent made each entry. Not supported: No dry-run or approval layer for agent writes published.
What it costs
Free planSupported: Free read-only plan with no time limit — full read access and 50 AI requests/mo, forever. Writing to the ledger needs a paid plan. Not supported: No free plan. A 14-day trial of premium features, plus 2 months free on Starter.

The honest part

When Puzzle is the better choice

We’d rather you pick the right tool than churn in three months. These are the cases where we’d point you at them.

You are a US SaaS startup

Puzzle says it is optimized for software companies, and that focus shows. If you have no inventory, one entity, and USD-only revenue, most of what DayZero adds is surface area you will never open.

Your firm will not buy from a competitor

Puzzle states it does not provide bookkeeping, tax, or accounting services directly. DayZero does run a managed service. For some practices that is disqualifying, and it is a fair objection.

You want to start cheaper

Puzzle's Starter plan is $30/mo and Core is $72/mo, against $100/mo for our lowest paid tier. If you need write access on a tight budget and fit their profile, they are less expensive to begin with.

You want proven references today

Puzzle names firms publicly — Burkland, Accountalent, Decimal, Attivo Partners and others. We are earlier, and we would rather tell you that than pretend otherwise. If reference customers are a procurement requirement, that gap is real.

Common questions

What is the real difference between DayZero and Puzzle?

Who they are built for. Puzzle says it is optimized for software companies and built for USD, single-entity operations, and it is very good at that. DayZero is built for businesses with physical operations or international reach — inventory, multi-currency, and multi-entity consolidation are in the ledger rather than out of scope. If you are a US SaaS startup, that breadth is weight you will not use.

Is Puzzle free?

Not any more. Puzzle offers a 14-day trial of its premium features and 2 months free on the Starter plan, then paid plans start at $30/mo. Many third-party review sites still describe a free plan capped at $20,000 of cumulative transaction volume — that plan is no longer on Puzzle's pricing page. DayZero's free plan is read-only rather than volume-capped: full read access forever, with writes on a paid plan.

Does DayZero compete with my accounting firm?

Partly, and we would rather say so than have you find out later. DayZero sells software to firms and also runs a managed bookkeeping service. Puzzle states plainly that it does not provide bookkeeping, tax, or accounting services directly. If that conflict matters to your practice, weigh it honestly — it is a real difference, not a technicality.

Which one is better for an accounting firm?

Both have real staff permissions — Puzzle has Full, Partial, and Restricted Access roles with unlimited users on its higher plans, and DayZero has owner, admin, member, and viewer per client. The difference is above that: DayZero adds firm-level teams, per-client access grants, shared chart-of-accounts templates, and tools that answer a question across your whole book of business in one call.

Can I drive my books from an AI agent?

With DayZero, yes. There is a hosted MCP server with scoped OAuth, dry-run writes by default, approval gates on actions like send, void, and finalize, and a tamper-evident audit chain that records whether a human or an agent made each entry. Puzzle publishes no MCP server, and its API is gated to platform partners and large firms while in active development.

Run both against a real month

Import your history, close one month in each, and compare. Our free plan keeps read access forever, so there is nothing to cancel if you stay.
