DayZero vs Xero
Xero is the best-liked ledger in the category and the one most businesses pick when they reject QuickBooks. Here is where we actually diverge — and where Xero is still the better answer.
You operate outside the US, invoice in several currencies, or depend on a specific app from their marketplace. Xero’s local compliance depth and 1000+ integrations are things we will not match, and unlimited users come standard on every plan.
You consolidate multiple entities, need real inventory depth — BOMs, landed cost, 3-way match — or want close automation and a hosted MCP endpoint your AI assistant can write to safely.
| Capability | DayZero | Xero |
|---|---|---|
| Doing the work | ||
| Close automation | Supported: 24 specialist agents run reconciliation, accruals, close checklists, and close-readiness scoring — on every plan. | Partially supported: JAX, Xero's AI agent, automates bank reconciliation and invoice data extraction. It is not a full close runner with checklists and readiness scoring. |
| AI agents | Supported: Agents cover the ledger end to end and can be driven from your own AI assistant through the MCP server. | Supported: JAX is a real agentic product — Xero orchestrates multiple agents behind it, built on Claude under their Anthropic partnership. |
| Board-ready reporting | Supported: Reports built from a prompt, with AI commentary on every chart. PDF, PPT, and live-link export. | Partially supported: Strong, well-regarded report library with analytics included on every plan. Commentary is yours to write. |
| Scope of the platform | ||
| Multi-currency | Supported: Supported, with FX rates maintained in the ledger. | Supported: 160+ currencies with automatic gain/loss tracking — one of the best implementations in the category. Requires the Established plan. |
| Inventory | Supported: Catalog, BOMs, POs, 3-way match, cost lots, and true landed cost — included, not a separate system. | Partially supported: Tracks stock levels and item costs. Manufacturing depth — BOMs, landed cost, 3-way match — means an App Store partner. |
| Payroll | Supported: Synced through Finch, so payroll journals land in the ledger automatically. | Partially supported: Xero Payroll in the US is powered by Gusto, purchased alongside the subscription rather than included. |
| Multi-entity consolidation | Supported: Entity groups and intercompany elimination built into the ledger. | Not supported: Not native. Xero lists consolidated reporting as not currently planned and points customers at App Store partners such as Translucent, G-Accon, and Syft. |
| App ecosystem | Partially supported: A focused integration set — banks, Stripe, Shopify, Square, Ramp, Finch, Slack — with the accounting surface built in rather than bolted on. | Supported: 1000+ app integrations. If your business already runs on a niche tool, Xero almost certainly connects to it and we may not. |
| Building on it | ||
| MCP server for AI agents | Supported: Hosted remote server with OAuth 2.1, scoped tokens, and firm-wide fan-out across every client in one call. | Partially supported: An official MCP server with read and write access — but self-hosted, run locally with your own developer credentials rather than a hosted endpoint you authorize. |
| Safe agent writes | Supported: Dry-run by default, explicit approval on send, void, and finalize, and a tamper-evident audit chain that records whether a human or an agent made each entry. | Partially supported: History and notes track changes, but there is no dry-run or approval layer purpose-built for agent writes. |
| Accounting API | Supported: REST API covering the full ledger, with a public reference for every operation. | Supported: Mature, well-documented API with a large developer community and a published AI toolkit. |
| Plans & reach | ||
| User seats | Supported: Unlimited on every paid plan. Roles and permissions included. | Supported: Unlimited users on every plan at no extra cost — the same model, and a genuine advantage over QuickBooks for both of us. |
| Usage limits on the entry plan | Supported: $100/mo with unlimited transactions and no invoice or bill caps. | Partially supported: The Early plan caps you at 20 invoices and 5 bills per month — app-partner transactions count toward it. Unlimited starts at Growing. |
| Free plan | Supported: Free read-only plan with no time limit — full read access and 50 AI requests/mo, forever. | Not supported: No free plan; a trial only. |
| International reach | Partially supported: Multi-currency and multi-entity in the ledger, with US-centric bank and payroll connections today. | Supported: Xero's core strength — deep local compliance and bank feeds across many countries, and the default choice in several of them. |

When Xero is the better choice
We’d rather you pick the right tool than churn in three months. These are the cases where we’d point you at them.
You are outside the US
This is the clearest case. Xero has local compliance, tax handling, and bank feeds across many countries. Our connections are US-centric today, and we would rather say so than have you discover it during onboarding.
Your stack depends on their app store
1000+ integrations against our focused set. If your business runs on a niche tool, check our integration list first — if it is not there, Xero is the safer choice.
Your accountant works in Xero
Xero has deep loyalty among accountants, and for good reason. If your practice lives in it and will not move, the monthly export friction usually outweighs what you would gain.
Low volume, simple books
If 20 invoices and 5 bills a month covers you, Xero's Early plan is cheaper than anything we offer and entirely sufficient.
Common questions
What is the real difference between DayZero and Xero?
Xero is a very good ledger with an enormous ecosystem around it — the model is that anything specialized is an app you add. DayZero puts inventory, multi-entity consolidation, and close automation in the core product instead. If you like assembling a stack, Xero's is the best available. If you want fewer moving parts, that is the trade.
Doesn't Xero have AI agents too?
Yes, and JAX is a serious product — Xero orchestrates multiple agents behind it, built on Claude. The differences are scope and access: JAX focuses on reconciliation and data extraction rather than running a full close with checklists and readiness scoring, and Xero's MCP server is self-hosted with your own developer credentials rather than a hosted endpoint your assistant can authorize against.
Can Xero consolidate multiple entities?
Not natively. Xero lists consolidated reporting as not currently planned and directs customers to App Store partners like Translucent, G-Accon, or Syft. In DayZero, entity groups and intercompany elimination are in the ledger itself.
Can I migrate my Xero data to DayZero?
Yes. DayZero connects directly to Xero and imports your chart of accounts, counterparties, historical transactions, and attachments, keeping links back to the original Xero records so nothing is orphaned.
What happens when the AI gets something wrong?
Agent writes are dry-run by default, actions like sending, voiding, and finalizing require explicit approval, and every entry lands in a tamper-evident audit chain that records whether a human or an agent made it. Corrections are one step and the agent learns from them.
See it against your own books
Connect Xero, import your history, and run a close side by side. The free plan keeps read access forever, so there is nothing to cancel if you stay.
