Notification Preferences
Notification Preferences controls how alerts reach you, not what is in your notification list. For each topic, such as Billing, AP Approval, or Bank Connection, you pick the channels that should carry it. Open Settings > Notification Preferences and switch to the Preferences tab.
Key capabilities
- Grid of notification topics by channel: In-app, Email, and Slack
- A small "default" tag on any setting you have not changed yourself
- Reset on a topic to return it to the standard behavior
- Firm defaults section with an email policy for the whole staff team, editable by firm owners and admins
- Pop-up notifications choice: All pop-ups, Important only, or Errors only
- Saves each change as you tick it
- Same personal settings in the client portal's Notifications section
- The page's other tab, Inbox, shows the firm-wide notification feed
How it works
Three layers decide whether you hear about something. The firm sets an email default for staff, you override it per topic and channel, and the pop-up setting then decides how loudly an alert that reaches you announces itself on this device.

- Open Settings > Notification Preferences and click the Preferences tab.
- Under My preferences > Notification topics, find a topic and tick or untick In-app, Email, or Slack. Each click saves at once.
- Click Reset at the end of a row to remove your choices for that topic and follow the default again.
- Use Pop-up notifications to choose All pop-ups, Important only, or Errors only. Hover or read the line under it for what each hides.
- Firm owners and admins can adjust Firm defaults above it, which sets the email policy for every staff member.
- Click Inbox to switch back to the list of firm notifications.
Pro tips
- Mute routine sync pings by turning off Bank Sync or QuickBooks Sync, while keeping the matching Connection topics on so you still hear about broken connections.
- Turn on Email for AP Approval if you approve bills away from your desk.
- Set a firm default only when you want the whole team to behave the same; individual choices still win for the people who make them.
- Choose Important only for pop-ups on a busy day. Warnings, errors, and urgent alerts still appear.
- Slack posts to the firm's Slack channel, which you set up in Integrations.
- Your topic choices follow you across businesses, but the pop-up choice is saved per browser, so set it on each computer you use.
In-depth guide
Preferences versus the notification list
| Notification list | Notification Preferences | |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Work through alerts: resolve, snooze, dismiss | Choose which alerts reach you and where |
| Where | The bell and the Inbox | This page |
| Scope on this page | The Inbox tab shows firm-wide items across clients | The Preferences tab |
Dismissing the same routine notice every day is a sign to change a preference instead.
Topics
The grid lists every topic DayZero can raise, including Billing, AP Approval, Anomaly, Bank Connection, Bank Sync, Xero Connection, Xero Sync, QuickBooks Connection, QuickBooks Sync, Recurring Spend, Month-End, Intercompany, Ledger, Notes, Email Inbox, Reconciliation, Partner Credit, Proposed Changes, Approval Reminders, Background Jobs, Overdue Close Jobs, and Other. The list comes from DayZero itself, so new topics appear without any action from you.
Firm defaults versus yours
Firm defaults only cover the Email channel. Slack is set per channel under Integrations, and each person controls their own in-app view. A topic you have not changed follows the firm's default, which is why unchanged cells carry the "default" tag. Staff who are not owners or admins see the firm section as read-only.
Pop-up notifications
| Choice | What still shows |
|---|---|
| All pop-ups | Everything, including routine confirmations |
| Important only | Warnings, errors, and urgent alerts |
| Errors only | Only errors and urgent alerts |
This choice is remembered by the browser you are using, so set it again on another computer. It does not change which notifications are delivered, only how loudly they pop up.
Business-level email policy
For a client business, firm owners and admins set an email policy for everyone in that business under the Notifications tab of Business Settings (open a business from Settings > Businesses; see Business Management).
Edge cases
- If your firm role cannot be confirmed, the page warns you and leaves the firm defaults read-only.
- If a preference fails to save, an error message appears and the box keeps its earlier state.
